Empty space

Within the space of this project, the immaterial collides - shaping a structure for the present and the absent. The exhibition brings together those ambivalent relationships: of appearance and disappearance, lightness and transparency. Exploring ideas around ‘white and black noise’.

We are honoured to present our curatorial project ‘Empty Space’ - that questions the role of vacuum in both a scientific and philosophical approach. Considering the emptiness on a scale from the feel of the body, to the abstracted field of the spatial zone, ‘Empty Space’ is a first outcome of an interdisciplinary participation of artists that brings together their own particular visions of emptiness.

Typically used to describe the fundamental componant of our Universe, empty space has been theorized by a wide range of scientists such as Aristotle, Newton and Einstein. These theories are allowing a better understanding of the universe that envelops us. Recent thinking puts forward the idea that a constant energy is filling up the space, which plays the role of a vacuum. That matter is yet to be determined, however it’s the core constituent to our thinking. ‘Empty Space’ is debating the border of this (un)knowledge - and it’s blurred complexity.

Relation to Noise is an essential factor in our curatorial work. From this, we are elaborating a conversation with the artists, aesthetically and artistically. The ‘Empty Space’ exhibition will also consider sound perception through the concept of ‘black and white noise’ - those waves that, in their antagonism, are almost an imperceptible signal. Furthermore, the paradoxical state of unsubstantial materiality interests us : this fluid matter seems not empty, but possessed with an energy - where quantum particles are moving constantly; forming and disappearing.

A conversational format of exhibition tackles those philosophical questions concerning art, sound and science. We are looking to generate a haunted place - with half-shadows bringing up the invisibility of those fields. The poetic works presented (woven from image, sound and light) analyze undetermined layers of cosmological space. An in-depth attempt at writing a newly re-imagined dark matter.
